Supermarket Raises Awareness for Over Consumption

The Plastic Bag Store is a supermarket where all the products are made from discarded single-use plastics. Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, visitors can buy tickets to see the store come to life and question the culture of consumption and convenience.

Artist Robin Frohardt said the inspiration behind the store was her personal visits to supermarkets when cashiers would double bag products that were already inside bags, inside boxes in more bags. The overconsumption of plastic in the industry frustrated her - so she turned the energy into an art installation.

The shelves are stocked with grocery items that were handmade with plastic collected from streets and garbage dumps. Goods include produce, meat, ambient products, toiletries, cakes and sushi rolls.

The store was co-presented by the University Musical Society and the Graham Sustainability INstitue with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.
