Trialling Laundry Refillables In-Store

refill

NL | Lidl has launched a six-month pilot program to assess customer interest in refilling detergent at its stores. The pilot includes refill stations installed in ten Lidl branches, allowing customers to fill reusable packaging with Formil detergent and Doussy fabric softener. This initiative aims to reduce plastic usage, offering customers environmental and financial benefits. Customers receive a discount on each refill compared to the initial purchase, encouraging the use of reusable packaging.

Joska Sesink, Lidl's sustainable packaging specialist, expressed awareness of the consumer desire to reduce plastic and sees this pilot as a way to make refilling accessible to a broad audience. The supermarket has set a target to reduce the plastic consumption of its own brand packaging by 30 percent by 2025.

The refill stations feature advanced technology, are low-maintenance, and leak-free. Positioned in the middle of the detergent shelf, customers can choose from four own-brand items: Formil colour, white and black detergent, and Doussy fabric softener. The process involves customers placing reusable packaging in the refill station, filling it through the 'smart cap,' and receiving an immediate display of the amount of plastic saved. Customers can return to the store to refill the packaging when needed. This initiative aligns with Lidl's commitment to sustainability and reducing plastic waste.
