USA | The retail landscape is transforming significantly, driven by technological innovation and changing consumer behaviours. According to the latest report by Ibotta, key trends are reshaping how brands and retailers approach marketing, promotions, and customer engagement.
In its 2025 retail trends report, Ibotta report's that retailers are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence and data analytics to personalise marketing efforts. The traditional "one-size-fits-all" approach to promotions is becoming obsolete. The industry is moving towards more targeted strategies, with AI algorithms helping to generate personalised promotions based on individual consumer behaviour.
The report highlights several critical developments:
- Real-time sales measurement is replacing annual marketing budget allocations. Brands can now track promotion effectiveness with unprecedented precision, comparing the purchasing behaviours of consumers exposed to offers versus those who are not.
- Economic pressures are driving significant changes in consumer spending. The State of Spend report shows that 72 percent of consumers report that the challenging economy directly impacts their grocery shopping habits, increasing interest in private label and premium products.
- Hybrid shopping experiences are gaining prominence, with 89 percent of shoppers desiring more flexible pickup options. Digital technologies are bridging online and in-store experiences, with mobile apps playing a central role in loyalty programmes.
E-commerce and social commerce are experiencing rapid growth. Grocery e-commerce is expected to reach $120 billion annually by 2028, representing 12.8 percent of all grocery spending. Social commerce is equally promising, with an estimated 110.4 million social media purchasers in 2024.
Key technological innovations, such as electronic shelf labels (ESLs), are set to transform in-store experiences. Currently, 75 percent of purchase considerations happen in the aisle, and these digital tags will enable real-time, personalised marketing directly to shoppers.
With the addition of AI and machine learning, new tech and smart promotions, and an increased digital retail presence, the industry is facing its biggest year of change yet. As we march toward the future, these retail industry trends will continue gaining traction, changing the way brands and retailers approach their promotions and marketing spend and how they reach their customers.
