Foodstuffs have partnered with Whakarongorau Aotearoa, the New Zealand Telehealth services, to help support those most vulnerable and affected by the damages and devastation caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.

The 24/7 service is available through text or call, individuals across the country need only dial 1737, and they will be able to receive mental health support.

Managing Director of Foodstuffs, Chris Quin, stated that the organisation recognises that the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle, compounded with the ongoing poor weather, cause significant distress for those affected.

"We understand events like Cyclone Gabrielle, and the ongoing bad weather can cause significant stress and anxiety for individuals and communities. That's why we're partnering with Whakarongorau Aotearoa, to remind people that support and advice are available and how to access it when ready, said Quin.

Quin reiterated those feeling overwhelmed and stressed to reach out and that the specialist support available is free. To spread the message of the 1737 helpline, Foodstuffs has been promoting the service through their Facebook and email updates and printing statements regarding it on receipts through their PAK’nSAVE, New World and Four Squares stores.

Acting Chief Executive of Whakarongorau Aotearoa, Glynis Sandland, expressed that the far-reaching impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle are as much of a distress in mental welfare as physical safety.

“Just as important as physical and practical support is providing psychosocial support for people’s wellbeing. With the help of Foodstuffs, we’re ensuring people know that if they, or someone they know, needs mental wellbeing support or advice, they can call or text 1737 anytime,” shared Sandland.

The 1737 service provides free, confidential support for anyone struggling with stress, anxiety or otherwise as a result of the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle.
