Foodstuffs Predicts Mother's Day Trends

Foodstuffs, the co-op behind PAK’nSAVE, New World and Four Square, has undertaken a significant research endeavour in preparation for Mother's Day, exploring various potential gift options.

Foodstuffs contacted more than 1,100 online panel members to learn what New Zealanders have planned for Mother’s Day.

“The insights form part of the way the co-operatives ensure what’s on offer instore reflects the unique way Kiwis intend to acknowledge the special people in their lives,” said Chris Day, head of customer insights and intelligence at Foodstuffs New Zealand.

“Quality time is significant when we think about celebrating our mums, and this research shows that this year, for most of us, this is likely to be a family dinner at home.”

Panel members, specifically mothers, gave similar replies, with 43 percent saying that if money and time weren’t an option, they would spend time with family.

Over one-third, or 38 percent, answered that they planned Mother’s Day celebrations a week before, with five percent leaving it until the day itself.

Flowers are expected to be the most popular gift this year, with 38 percent, followed by chocolate at 35 percent.

“It’s clear that most Kiwis appreciate opportunities like Mother’s Day, which give us a chance to reflect and acknowledge how special some of the people in our lives are,” said Day.

“Celebrating doesn’t have to be expensive either, as we know that the cost of living is top of mind for Kiwis at the moment. The research shows that homemade gifts and doing something nice for your mum , like cooking a meal, are also valued.”

Pets are also on the agenda, with 18 percent of those surveyed planning to celebrate Mother’s Day as pet owners and 30 percent expected to receive gifts from their pets.

“Occasions like Mother’s Day help us celebrate our relationships with others, even if they’re with pets rather than people,” said Day.

This survey has shown that mothers of all kinds can expect a day filled with celebration.
