IRRADIATED PRODUCE ON NZ SHELVES

IRRADIATED Australian produce could end up on New Zealand shelves by early next year with Queensland’s Department of Agriculture seeking permission to protect 11 fruits and vegetables from the state’s fruit fly. The proposed irradiated produce would include apples, strawberries and nectarines with the change affecting close to $2 billion of fruit and vegetables grown in Queensland. The application is expected to be approved by Food Standards Australia New Zealand by April 2015.
