It's a natural, plant-based protective coating that can be applied to the skin of avocados and can double its shelf life. The tech has debuted at Costco after six-years of research and development. Avocados with Apeel not only have double the ripe time, they are of delicious quality and don't require the use of refrigeration or any preservatives.

"Avocados are just the starting point in our mission to fight food waste and bring fresher, better quality fruits and vegetables to more people everywhere," said a spokesperson.

"We’re excited to be working with exceptional partners as they share our vision of a food system that provides better quality food for all and less waste. With our partners, we believe we can increase the availability and accessibility of high quality, nutritious produce while simultaneously preserving our natural resources and environment," said James Rogers, CEO and Founder of Apeel Sciences.

Apeel is made of plant-derived materials — specifically, lipids and glycerolipids — that naturally exist in the peels, seeds and pulp of all the fruits and vegetables we already eat. It is colourless, odourless and tasteless on produce.

Apeel is a family of plant-derived coatings that fresh food growers, suppliers and retailers use to keep produce fresh. Produce with Apeel stays fresh two to three times longer, which promotes more sustainable growing practices, better quality food, and less food waste for everyone. For growers, suppliers and retailers, Apeel is the only postharvest solution that creates an optimal microclimate inside of every piece of produce, which leads to extended shelf life and transportability — without requiring refrigeration, controlled atmosphere, or preservatives.
