Wellington-based Upcycled Grain Project (UGP) has launched a range of sustainable and tasty crackers to appeal to environmentally friendly, health-savvy kiwis.
Upcycled Grain Project’s ethos of creating ‘sustainably delicious’ products and doing their part to reduce the impact on our planet’s resources, are the key drivers behind how the crackers are made. Ingredients in the crackers are sustainably sourced, 100% natural and GMO free. Available in two flavours, Rock Salt and Parmesan, the crackers have been crafted from ‘rescued’ spent brewers’ grain from the beer-making process.
When making beer, brewers steep malted barley to give body and flavour. They keep the liquid to make beer and discard the grain. These grains are sugar-free, packed full of protein and fibre, and are incredibly flavoursome. So, we ‘upcycle’ these grains with other natural ingredients to produce a range of delicious and nutritious snacks.
Not only does upcycling these ingredients minimise the amount of discarded materials, it also reduces the need to produce new materials — thus helping to reduce the strain on our already stretched planet.
These ‘snacks with a conscience’ are designed for the active kiwi lifestyle and are an ideal tasty and convenient on-the-go snack for hiking, cycling, traveling and more – they’re even great for at-home entertaining.
