The Warehouse first looked into grocery offerings in 2006 but had to close the Extra stores in 2009 due to low returns. In 2022, the business is looking at ways to expand the grocery range that returned to stores 18 months ago.
“We are stepping it up, we’ve been aggressive s prices have gone up in the duopoly, and it is an area that we believe we have a responsibility to help kiwis,” said Nick Grayston, The Warehouse Group Chief Executive to the New Zealand Herald.
Supermarket staples are now available in all 89 of The Warehouse stores, which are committed to keeping prices low as the cost of living increases. The private label TheMarketKitchen has 35 core items that sit at a price 25 percent less than branded alternatives.
“We will never be another Countdown or New World. New Zealand doesn’t need that, but kiwis need access to commodity-priced groceries and everyday value, and we are committed to doing that.”
The Warehouse parallel imports some of its groceries, which makes the prices low. The business’s most significant hurdles in achieving a grocery retail offering were the lack of access and the supply chain.
