The Otago Farmers Market is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a long lunch to showcase the producers and connections made through food.

Since opening in 2003, the Otago Farmers Market has been operating regularly, becoming a staple of community events.

The 20th-anniversary celebrations are taking place at the Dunedin Railway station, New Zealand’s longest rail platform, with guests to enjoy a specially created seasonal menu featuring late summer produce from the Otago Farmers Market vendors.

Chair of the Otago Framers Market, Sharyn Crawford said that it is an opportunity to gather and share the vast range of food from the Otago region.

“Every Saturday at the Market I observe the interactions between people and see the importance of food in creating opportunities to socialise, engage in conversations and make face-to-face connections. This lunch will provide a special opportunity to see people together at one long table, with lots of time to create community.”

Crawford added that guests would not likely see produce fresher than what will be served, and that to be celebrating the local food industry is more important than ever.

The menu will be comprised of fresh late-summer flavours for the entree, Otago lamb for the main course, and then dessert consisting of selected summer fruit grown in the region. The menu will also have options for those on vegan or vegetarian diets as well.
