THE BREADMAN ORGANIC BAKERY

The Breadman Bakery was created by Steffan Klink in 1993 when he moved from Germany to New Zealand. In over 20 years, the demand for delicious, healthy and locally baked bread has just kept increasing.

What is your company background, how did you start the business?

The Breadman Bakery is 26 years old and was started in Nelson by German baker Steffan Klink who wanted to make the bread he was used to in Germany, available in New Zealand. The bakery remains a strongly German-style bakery. It was taken over by John and Cassandra Booth 10 years ago and it is now based in the Christchurch CBD.

What is the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?

Everything in the bakery is made using organic ingredients and all the products are certified as vegan.

All our bread are made by hand and use traditional fermenting processes without the use of yeast. We make our own sourdough starters which are what makes the bread rise and to make bread like this is a 24-hour process which cannot be a short cut. The breads are alive and will continue to develop in texture and flavour as they mature. No additives or preservatives are used so the bread is a completely natural and living product. The gluten-free bread has its own special starters which means they are also yeast-free.

Has there been any recent company news?

Last year was our 25th anniversary and all our products have been certified vegan by the NZ Vegan Society.

What are the plans for the business moving forward, is there any expansion on the horizon?

Despite the current popularity of low carb diets, we remain committed to making our traditional products in the belief that they are a highly nutritious part of a well-balanced diet. Rye beads have many health benefits including providing valuable fibre for good gut health – something which is becoming increasingly better understood as an important whole health factor.
