Australian supermarket chain Coles experienced nationwide store closures over the weekend after a software glitch made checkouts inoperable.

Store closure notices were posted in front of supermarket doors across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria as eager shoppers started their day and attempted to do their Sunday morning grocery shopping. A small number of Coles stores were still able to operate during the glitch, causing massive cues at checkouts.

It is unknown what caused the glitch, but a statement released by Coles said: “Earlier this morning we had some minor IT problems in some of our supermarkets which were out of our team members’ control. We apologise for any inconvenience our customers experienced earlier this morning.”

Coles reopened its supermarkets again on Sunday afternoon much to the delight of Australian shoppers.
