Spanish government members are proposing a forced price cap on essential grocery products to help customers manage rising inflation. The Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz, and Minister for Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, have been meeting with representatives within the sector to come to an agreement.
"Supermarkets have margins that permit them to reduce their profits and contribute to their country. If they don't act in this grave moment for Spain, their reputations are on the line," said Díaz to the Financial Times.
This year has seen Spain's most significant increase in food and drink prices since 1994, and the suggested cap would be effective on between 20 and 30 products.
Supermarkets in the country are not happy with the suggestion, with a number of them implementing alternative campaigns such as '30 Items for 30 Euros.'
