Tesco Announces Huge Staff Changes

Tesco has announced it will be making management changes across its business. Shift Leaders will replace Store Management roles, and most in-store counters will be closed. The UK supermarket has already restructured 350 of its smaller stores, and this same plan will be rolled out across the Superstores and Extra Stores.

Approximately 1,800 new Shift Leader roles will be introduced and 1,750 Lead and Team Manager roles will be removed. Displaced staff members will be encouraged into the new roles with financial support or offered redundancy.

In-store counters have undergone changes since 2019, as customers moved toward more quality aisle products. All remaining counters and hot delis in Tesco stores will close from February 26th. Staff members will be offered alternative roles in store.

“These are difficult decisions to make, but they are necessary to ensure we remain focused on delivering value for our customers wherever we can, as well as ensuring our store offer reflects what our customers value the most. Our priority is to support those colleagues impacted and help find alternative roles within our business from the vacancies and newly created roles we have available,” said Jason Terry, Tesco UK and ROI CEO.

Tesco is also closing eight pharmacies, moving overnight roles to daytime in 12 stores and reducing hours in some post offices. The company is also removing some roles from Head Office and closing the Mainatence National Operating Centre in Milton Keynes.
