A Bright Signal of Autumn

A Bright Signal of Autumn

As autumn fruit begins to arrive in stores, retailers have a key opportunity to support both affordability and sales performance by backing locally grown produce, with New Zealand persimmons a standout this season.

Unlike many fruit categories, fresh persimmons sold in New Zealand are entirely locally grown, with no imports permitted. This gives retailers a unique advantage in a market where global disruption, fuel costs and supply chain pressures continue to influence pricing and availability.

“With persimmons, what you see in store is grown right here in New Zealand,” said Ian Turk, spokesperson for the New Zealand Persimmon Industry Council.

“That means a shorter, more reliable supply chain at a time when imported produce can be more exposed to cost and disruption.”

For retailers, this creates a compelling proposition, a premium-looking, seasonal fruit that can be positioned as an affordable option for shoppers navigating cost-of-living pressures.

Driving Sales Through Display and Availability

As with all seasonal produce, strong in-store presentation plays a critical role in driving sales.

Retailers are encouraged to maintain attractive, well-stocked displays while avoiding overfilling. A minimum amount of fruit should be presented to create visual impact and meet daily demand, with additional stock held off-display to preserve quality.

Persimmons’ incredible, vibrant orange colour is a natural signal of autumn and should be used to full effect in-store, drawing attention and reinforcing the season's feel.

Handling is key. Persimmons should be treated carefully to avoid bruising, and for the best shelf life, any fruit not on display should be stored in cool conditions, ideally in a chiller below 4°C or at 12–15°C.

Clear, simple messaging in-store can also help lift sell-through. Persimmons are a versatile fruit used in both sweet and savoury dishes, and incorporated into snacks, salads or desserts, helping reduce waste and increase consumer confidence in purchasing.

A Seasonal Feature That Delivers Value

With a limited seasonal window, persimmons provide retailers with an opportunity to create a strong autumn feature that is both visually striking and commercially smart.

At a time when both retailers and consumers are navigating rising costs, locally grown persimmons offer a rare combination of reliability, value and appeal.

By focusing on quality display, careful handling and clear messaging, retailers can turn this short seasonal window into a strong sales opportunity while supporting New Zealand growers and delivering value to Kiwi shoppers.
