The Glass Packaging Forum shared that last week marked a significant milestone in Aotearoa, New Zealand, as standardised kerbside recycling commenced nationwide for the first time.
This unified recycling service, encompassing container glass, cardboard and paper, cans, and specific types of plastic (types 1, 2, and 5), represents a crucial stride forward in the country's efforts to enhance its recycling rates. Implementing a consistent recycling message nationwide is now feasible, and it's essential to recognise the dedication and effort of all those involved in bringing this initiative to fruition.
While four councils (Hurunui, Gore, Clutha, and Westland) have been granted an extension on the deadline, others, such as Auckland, have signalled their intention to offer residents a grace period to adapt to the changes.
Although the regulation announcement last year was cause for celebration, the absence of a mandate for separate glass collection disappointed the Glass Packaging Forum. Many councils had taken proactive steps in this direction, opting to collect glass separately. Moving forward, the Glass Packaging Forum has said it will remain committed to advocating for the adoption of best practices, including the separate glass collection.
It eagerly waits to witness the positive impact of standardised collections on New Zealand's recycling landscape.
