Australia Showcases Agricultural Exports

AUSTRALIA | Australia’s agricultural sector took centre stage at World Food India (WFI) in New Delhi this month, as a delegation of industry representatives worked to strengthen ties with Indian food processors and highlight Australia's crucial role in India’s growing food processing sector.

WFI serves as a pivotal platform for India’s rapidly expanding food processing and manufacturing industries, offering an opportunity for countries like Australia to provide high-quality agricultural inputs essential for this sector’s growth.

The Australian delegation, representing key industries such as grain, red meat, nuts, and wine, alongside departmental staff, was there to emphasize Australia’s complementary role in India’s food manufacturing ecosystem. Australia’s agricultural exports, particularly counter-seasonal and high-value products, are seen as ideal supplements to India’s domestic production, enabling year-round processing and enhancing the capacity of Indian food processors.

Deputy Secretary of Trade and Regulation, Tina Hutchison, expressed optimism about the growing trade ties between the two nations.

"Australia has the capacity to fill the gaps in India’s agricultural production and ensure year-round food processing," she stated.

Hutchison underscored how Australia’s counter-seasonal produce perfectly aligns with India’s needs, providing critical support during off-seasons.

She further highlighted the existing robust agricultural trading relationship between the two countries, built on shared values of collaboration and a commitment to increasing two-way trade. "We see significant potential in India’s food processing sector, and Australia is eager to be a reliable partner," Hutchison noted.

Australia’s focus on exporting high-value products, including grains, meat, and wine, aligns well with India’s ambitions to scale up its food processing and re-export capabilities. This collaboration promises to benefit both nations, driving economic growth and fostering long-term partnerships in the global food supply chain.

In 2021-22, Australia imported A$577 million of agricultural products from India. The key products imported were rice (A$86 million), bread and pastry (A$45 million), coffee (A$29 million), and tea (A$25 million).
