FRANK’S SAUSAGES

Kiwis love their sausages. Unfortunately, Germans don’t love Kiwi sausages. Fortunately, one German decided to take it into his own hands and started making high quality sausages for Kiwis to enjoy country-wide.

What is your company background, how did you start the business?

“Frank and Sheryn Nagel started the company in 2008 – Frank, who is originally from Hamburg, was welcomed to New Zealand by his Kiwi wife’s family with a good old Kiwi snag. It was at that point he realised with horror that he was either going home, or he was going to have to start making his own sausages. Since those early days, Frank’s philosophy has always been based around keeping the products as natural as possible. Frank believes there is simply no need to have unhealthy fat filled sausages that contain poor quality meat, or are stuffed with fillers and preservatives. The first two years of Frank’s Sausages was operated out of the converted laundry in the couples house in Matamata. In 2010 Frank and Sheryn moved the business to a factory in Te Aroha West.”

What is the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?

“Our newly introduced retail range of five poached sausages are designed to be a quick and easy nutritious base for mid week meals that the whole family can enjoy. We have our Chicken Chipolatas, Pork Chipolatas, Frankfurters, Chicken French Tarragon and our Swiss Veal Bratwurst.”

“All of our sausages are made from 100 per cent free range premium cuts of meat. They contain absolutely no fillers of any kind flour and are naturally both gluten and preservative free. There are recipes and serving suggestions for each type of sausage are on the back of each pack.”

Has there been any recent company news?

“Our new retail range was launched in December 2016 and we are slowly and steadily rolling this out through the country. Last year Frank’s Sausages won a Cuisine Artisan award for our Frankfurter sausage, which was a wonderful recognition for a good quality Frankfurter.”

What are the plans for the business moving forward, is there any expansion on the horizon?

“Yes. We are just working on our new Food Control Plan and shortly moving to a new facility as we have outgrown the current factory.”

Where are your products currently available to buy, and are you looking at or wanting to expand your availability?

“Our new poached retail range is already available in the Farro Fresh stores, Moore Wilsons and selected New Worlds . We would like to see this range available in more retail outlets around the county over the next 12 months. Our fresh range of Gourmet Sausages, Fresh Gourmet Grinds® and small goods are available exclusively online. All of our sausages are made from premium cuts of Free Range meats, are Gluten Free and contain no fillers, binders, added preservatives or nitrates.”
