A quiet revolution is reshaping the way New Zealanders enjoy beer, wine and spirits.
The change is about moderation - more deliberate choices, more alcohol-free moments, and a clear preference for quality over quantity.
One practical sign of this shift is “zebra striping”, socialising while alternating between a beer, wine or spirit and a no- or low-alcohol (NoLo) option across the same occasion. It’s a simple change. Consumers are still savouring the flavour - while keeping a closer eye on how much alcohol they’re consuming.
That’s why the growth of NoLo drinks matters. This is not just a product trend; it’s about moderation. In recent years, New Zealand breweries, distilleries and winemakers have invested in innovation to lift the standard of NoLo beer, wine and spirits, with greater choice and better flavour.
What’s driving the shift? For many people, it’s practical: they’re driving, working early, or simply want to feel good the next day. For others, it’s about tracking their beverage consumption, choosing a lower-calorie drink, or paying closer attention to health and wellbeing.
