Women in Business | Denise Lane, Co-founder and Director, Night ‘n Day

From owning two small Dunedin stores to building one of New Zealand’s most recognisable convenience brands, Denise Lane has shaped Night ’n Day through hard work, instinct, and a deep understanding of people.

Her journey began early, working part-time in retail and food from just 13 years old, before taking a role as second cook at Balclutha Hospital. Later, moving to Dunedin, Lane bought her first store.

“I wanted to make it better than the average store, with so much more offered,” she said.

Balancing business ownership with raising two young children, Lane lived on-site, blending growth with flexibility. This approach would go on to shape the culture of Night ‘n Day.

A defining moment came in 1984, when retail advisor Ken Stevenson encouraged Lane to purchase what is now the group’s flagship Regent Road store, the foundation of what would become a national franchise.

In 1991, Stevenson helped establish the Night ’n Day franchise model, remaining a guiding influence for decades.

“Even now, I often think ‘what would Ken have decided?’” she said.

Over the years, the most rewarding aspects of Lane’s journey have been the people. Three original franchisees are still part of the group after 35 years, and second-generation owners are now running stores.

Lane also values the enjoyment, culture, and support of the Support Centre team, whose work helps franchisees lift performance, maintain standards, and stay connected across the network.

Community engagement has always been part of the brand’s DNA. Supporting local schools, charities, and sports groups is part of Lane’s hands-on approach.

She regularly works in-store with franchisees to improve standards and drive performance. For her, success is about continual improvement, helping others grow their businesses while maintaining high standards, all without losing the flexibility and personality that sets Night ’n Day apart.

Her advice to others entering the industry is simple, but honest: be prepared to work hard and for long hours, but don’t lose sight of balance.

“The business will consume you,” she added.

“Make sure you balance it with family time. There will be tough times, but you need the determination and grit to get through. Enjoy the journey and celebrate the successes.”

It’s a mindset that has not only driven Lane’s own success but also shaped a business that continues to evolve and grow nationally while staying rooted in the communities each store serves.
