UK supermarket Morrisons could be liable for a data breach which saw employee’s personal information uploaded to the internet by a rogue staff member. Over 5,500 of the chain's employees have grouped together to sue the supermarket and seek compensation, arguing that the leaked information left them open to potential identity theft.
Andrew Skelton, a senior auditor for Morrisons, leaked the personal data online which included names, addresses and bank details of staff. He was found guilty of fraud, disclosing personal data and unauthorised access to computer material in 2015, and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Morrison’s stated that the former employee’s actions were criminal and that the chain worked hard to get the exposed personal information taken down as quickly as possible.
