Supermarkets And Farmers Working Together

Caprabo

Spanish and  Andorran supermarket, Caprabo, has introduced in its supermarkets the sale of tomatoes with 100 percent recyclable and compostable wrapping made of paper, paper mesh, and bamboo.

The initiative, which foresees the sale of nearly 205 thousand kilos of tomatoes per year without using plastics in its packaging, will save three tonnes of plastic in a year.

"Caprabo hopes to advance initiatives that contribute to minimising the impact of plastics on the environment. And we, as a supermarket, can do it with monkey actions that allow us to take extreme care of the environment", explained Fernando Tercero, Caprabo Proximity Products Manager.

Tercero stated that from the supermarket’s point of view, the initiative is driven by its local suppliers as it reflects the effort that suppliers input to adapt according to consumer interests and needs, as well as for their concerns and care for sustainability.

Tomato producer and Director of Conca de Tordera, Joseph Ferrer, explained that the supermarket was the first company that the tomato producer had worked with where the importance of packaging with respect for the environment was strictly followed at every point of the chain.

“[Their] commitment as a responsible supermarket helps us meet one of our highest goals: maintaining our environment."

Ferrer added that at the Conca de Tordera, they had an intrinsic vocation as farmers to take care of the rural environment, as avoiding plastic helps farmers care for the countryside, which is their way of life.
