New Zealand dollars

New research has shown how much money is being spent on groceries globally. The countries where consumers spend the most on groceries within the goods and service category, relative to their income, included Nigeria, Myanmar and Kenya, at 59 percent, 56.6 percent and 56.1 percent, respectively.

Despite being in second place for the highest percentage of spending relative to income in dollar value, Myanmar was also the country that spent the lowest amount of dollars (US$42) compared to other countries.

Based on research from Euromonitor International, Picodi Research and Analytics released a report that when it came to the dollar value of grocery spending in the Asia Pacific, New Zealand came in second place, after Hong Kong, spending an average of NZ$466 a month on groceries.

Hong Kong consumers spent an average of US$306 per month, and Japan, in third place, saw consumers spending an average of US$288 per month.

When it comes to where consumers spend their money, less than a tenth of spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages consumed at home was charged by the USA (at 6.7 percent), Singapore (at 8.4 percent), and the UK (at 8.7 percent). New Zealand ranked 13th in this category, with spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages consumed at home making up just 12.2 percent of New Zealander's spending on goods and services.
