LOBBY GROUP OPPOSES TIMARU BOTTLE SHOP

Lobby group Alcohol Action South Canterbury is opposing the opening of a new bottle shop in Timaru, next to Pak’nSave, claiming that it would turn the area into an ‘alcohol hub’. The group also expressed concerns that the local community hadn’t been properly informed about the licence application, adding that minor crimes tend to increase where there’s a greater density of liquor sellers.

Just like the nearby Pak’nSave store, the new Henry’s bottle shop is owned by Foodstuffs NZ, which to date hasn't received any feedback about its licence application. The police, however, are not opposing it.
