NZMP, Fonterra’s dairy ingredients business, has developed a new protein ingredient that delivers 10 percent more protein than standard whey protein offerings, making it ideal for use in sports drinks and energy bars. Lower in fat, sugar and carbs while also faster-acting, this ground-breaking innovation is made with lactic casein whey.

“People are taking more interest in their diet and health, which means as the awareness of the benefits of protein goes more mainstream, sports nutrition is no longer just for exercise fanatics,” said Neil Fraser, lead technologist, Fonterra.

Among the benefits of protein, Fraser listed healthy ageing and the growth and maintenance of all cells in the body, particularly muscles.

The launch of the NZMP SureProtein ingredients has been followed by orders from one of the biggest manufacturers of sports drinks in the US, and positive feedback has also come from trials of the new product in Japan.
