Tesco has removed over one hundred best-before dates from its produce section claiming it will help in reducing food waste. Research has indicated 69 percent of shoppers think it is a good idea to remove best-before dates. 53 percent of customers believe this would make a difference in food waste as more customers would keep produce for longer without thinking it needs to be disposed of before a specific date.
Part of the company’s commitment to food waste reduction, best-before dates will be removed from 116 products, following Tesco’s removal of guidance dates from nearly 70 items earlier this year. The aim to prevent food that is still perfectly edible from being thrown away.
“Removing best-before dates is our way of making it easier for customers to reduce food waste at home and save money in the process. It’s simply not right that food goes to waste and we’re going to do everything we can to help,” said Mark Little, head of food waste reduction, Tesco.
