UK | Lidl GB is gearing up for a potentially record-breaking Christmas season, experiencing an 11 percent surge in customers over the last six weeks.
The anticipation for the festive season started early, with impressive sales figures, including two mince pies sold every second since September and a considerable share of the Panettone market.
According to Kantar data, there has been a £685 million shift in spending to Lidl GB throughout the year, with £58 million redirected from premium supermarkets like Waitrose, M&S, and Ocado. Notable products such as Deluxe Lobster tails and red wines have seen substantial sales increases. Lidl's own-label Montaudon Champagne triumphed over a high-end competitor in a recent blind taste test.
Despite early stocking, Lidl foresees its busiest day on December 22nd, with over two million shoppers expected to visit its stores, surpassing its previous peak on Easter Saturday.
Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell shared his excitement about the festive season and acknowledged the challenging year for many people. The supermarket is also engaging in community outreach by donating around 700,000 meals to local charities and food banks in December, contributing to a total of approximately eight million meals donated in 2023.
As the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK, Lidl GB recently overtook Asda to become the third-largest supermarket in London.
