SUPERMARKET IMPLEMENTS “HAPPY HOUR” TO REDUCE WASTE

Finland supermarket chain, S-market sells soon-to-be expired products at a discounted price after 9PM every night to reduce waste and limit its impact on climate change.

This phenomenon has been branded by the company as “happy hour,” and rightly so, as shoppers can freely avail food items such as meat and fish at a marked down price from 30 to 60 percent.

Over the last two years since the happy hour has been implemented, the grocery chain has been able to keep unnecessary waste out of landfills where it rots and emit methane; a gas said to be about 25 more times harmful than carbon dioxide.
