Co-op is the next in line to trialling energy-saving lighting in the UK. Dimmer lights are being trialled in 500 of its 2,000 stores. The change could cut electricity bills by £4,000 a year for a single store, or £10m if it is implemented across every Co-op store.
Sainsbury’s already lowers lighting during less popular visiting hours and when it is bright outside. Morrisons dims lights for most of its stores' first and last hour of trade and has a ‘quiet hour’ on Saturdays.
Europe is currently in the middle of an energy crisis. While UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has said there will be enough supplies to manage winter, the energy industry is providing warnings.
“We do have good energy supplies in the UK, we can get through the winter,But of course, I am always looking for ways we can improve the price for consumers. That’s why we put into place the energy price guarantee as well as making sure that we have as much supply as possible,” said Truss.
However, the National Grids Electricity System Operator has warned that planned three-hour blackouts could be imposed in some areas if gas supplies fall short of demand.
