The Vatican itself has committed to slavery-proofing its own supply chains. The policy was unveiled during a recent gathering of Australian organisation The Global Foundation, last Sunday.
Members of French-based Consumer Goods Forum were also present and shared the same commitment. The Forum represents 2.7 trillion euros (NZ$ 4.6 trillion) in annual sales and includes 400 supermarket chains, such as Carrefour, and giant food manufacturers Nestle, Campbell’s and Hershey’s, just to name a few.
Acknowledging the Forum for its resolution against forced labour, cardinal George Pell, head of the Holy See's secretariat for the economy, confirmed that the Vatican will do its part.
