Countdown’s Commitment To Growers

Pieter de Wet

Countdown has announced a range of targeted support to help growers who Cyclone Gabrielle has impacted get back on their feet.

The support package includes $700,000  ring-fenced for cash grants, a $50,000 donation to Rural Support Trust, other in-kind targeted support, and commitments around future growing agreements.

Pieter de Wet, Countdown’s Commercial Director for Fresh, stated that as growers continue to identify their needs following the cyclone's devastation, Countdown is committed to helping their partners practically and meaningfully.

“The weather events over the past few weeks have caused immense destruction that will have a long-lasting impact on many communities and their livelihoods. That includes our growers who play a vital role in ensuring Kiwi have access to healthy fresh fruit and vegetables,” said de Wet.

De Wet explained that as a prominent business whose welfare depends on its growers' well-being and success, aiding recovery following the cyclone is a shared responsibility.

“As a large business that relies on our growers having sustainable businesses, it’s our responsibility to step up and help them when they need it most, which is why I’m incredibly proud of our commitments today.”

Richard Burke, Chief Executive of Leader Brand Produce, agreed that the strength of the relationship between enterprises, such as Countdown, to growers is essential both on a business level and as a mode of integrity in helping out fellow New Zealanders and communities struggling after Cyclone Gabrielle.

“When things like this happen, it’s great to know your partners have your back. Having the Countdown team in Gisborne after the Cyclone meant they could see the challenges we faced on the ground and give us practical support.

In addition to this above programme, Countdown has donated $450,000 in food and funds to help charities and organisations providing on-the-ground assistance over the last month. These charities and organisations directly support impacted communities.

However, with the support of Kiwis nationwide, Countdown has also fundraised a further $250,000, helping provide essential support as people look to recover.
