New World Te Atatū Opening Approaches

Construction of New World Te Atatū has reached another major milestone, with the building now weathertight and internal fit-out works underway.

The project has progressed steadily since structural works were completed earlier this year, with teams now focused on bringing the store's interior to life ahead of its planned August opening.

The NZD 50 million development, including the value of the land, will deliver a full-service New World to the Peninsula, transforming the site that Foodstuffs North Island bought in July 2023.

The redevelopment includes a complete transformation of the former site and expands the footprint to 3,363 m² of gross floor area. Once complete, the store will offer a modern, full-service supermarket with a large retail space, supported by six team-operated checkouts, 10 self-scan checkouts and 136 car parks.

A covered drive-through Click & Collect area with six dedicated parks is also included, along with a large back-of-house area for collating online orders to support growing online shopping demand.

Nick Hanson, Head of Property at Foodstuffs North Island, said the project is now entering one of its most visible phases, with signage due to go up soon.

“With the building now weathertight, our teams are moving at pace on the internal fit-out. This is the stage where the store really starts to come together,” he said.

“We know the community has been waiting for a new supermarket, and our focus is on keeping everything on track so we can open the doors as soon as possible.”

An owner-operator for the store will be announced shortly, ahead of the final fit-out and commissioning stages. Around 90 roles will be created once the store is ready to open.

Foodstuffs North Island’s investment in Te Atatū will deliver a modern supermarket designed for convenience and a strong fresh food offer, supporting the daily needs of the 15,000 residents who call the Peninsula home.
