Improving Supply Chain Sustainability

Improving the supply chain

Improving the sustainability effort of a business, whether buying or selling goods, primarily revolves around the supply chain of a business. Approximately 70 percent of a business's sustainability impact can be traced to the supply chain, making it an important area of focus when attempting to conduct more environmentally friendly practices.

Examples of supply chain sustainability include a variety of considerations. The most significant examples are around cutting the wastage of resources.

Consideration of the environmental and human effects of a product's journey through the supply chain, ranging from sourcing raw materials to production, storage, and transportation, can increase sustainability. Secondly, reducing environmental damage to a business’s carbon footprint, such as energy usage, water consumption and waste production, can also increase sustainability.

Assessing the sustainability of your business can be evaluated through a free self-assessment toolbox, Docket, launched in February of 2023. The Sustainable Business Network was created as a collaborative effort between the government and the private sector.

The Docket toolbox is a short online assessment that overviews how well a business cares for its team and the environment. It also offers practical suggestions and solutions on how a company can improve its sustainability.

As well as having a positive impact on the environment, the Docket tool and its suggestions can also help businesses save money to save as its focus is on the efficiency of energy and resources. Secondly, by taking climate action, companies will attract and be able to retain talented people. Finally, it will support the company by giving it a competitive edge compared to other companies.
