EVERYBODY FOR THEMSELVES ON TRADING HOURS

The Shop Trading Hours amendments bill has encountered a strong opposition from Retail NZ, according to which the proposed changes, by removing restrictions on Easter Sunday and giving all 67 local councils the power to decide their own rules, would only increase confusion.
In presenting its case before Parliament’s commerce committee, the retail trade association said that the regulation of shop opening hours should be liberalised through a single set of rules, uniformly applied throughout the country, allowing stores, workers and customers the right to make their own choices without being forced by government.
The bills also enables employees to refuse work on Easter Sunday without giving a reason.
