Strawberry Growers Praise Growing Conditions

New Zealand growers have reported a strong strawberry crop this year, thanks to favourable growing conditions.

New Zealanders can expect high-quality berries with rich colour and flavour, ideal for enjoying fresh or using in seasonal recipes.

Dr Carolyn Lister, Principal Scientist and Science Team Leader (Food & Health Information) at Plant & Food Research and a Trustee for 5+ A Day Charitable Trust, said this was great news for the nation, because strawberries aren’t just delicious, but they’re also good for health.

“Just one cup provides 200 percent of your daily vitamin C, supporting your immune system and helping to keep your skin radiant," said Dr Lister.

"They’re also a source of dietary fibre for healthy digestion, folate for growth and development, niacin to keep your brain cells happy, and potassium to help maintain healthy blood pressure. In short, they’re a tasty way to get a powerhouse of nutrients into your diet."

With peak harvest in mid-November, New Zealanders can enjoy these sweet, natural treats at their lowest prices. Look for berries that are fully red, glossy, and topped with fresh green leaves.

The best way to store strawberries is to keep them in the fridge to maintain freshness. Their flesh is also delicate, so handle them gently to prevent bruising.

Dr Lister suggested getting creative in the kitchen and whipping up strawberry smoothies or salsas.  She said they’re also a great addition to any salad; try combining them with basil and mozzarella, watermelon and cucumber, or tangelos and spinach.

Beetroot, asparagus and rocket are other interesting salad ingredients that pair really well with strawberries.

"But if they’re unlikely to last that long in your house, just enjoy them straight from the punnet. Now’s the time to celebrate the joy of fresh New Zealand strawberries – vibrant, healthy, and oh-so-delicious. Grab a punnet (or two!) while supplies are at their peak and enjoy one of nature’s sweetest treats."
