Woolies NZ Rebrands Feta To Creamy & Crumbly Cheese

Woolworths releases new creamy and crumbly cheeses with campaign educating customers on big name change of feta

Woolworths New Zealand has released four new cheeses with familiar flavours and textures, but entirely new names.

The previous range of cheeses was sold as feta, but New Zealand’s Free Trade Agreement with the European Union means that from 2033, cheese can only be called feta if it’s produced in Greece.

Woolworths is getting well ahead of the deadline with the launch of its own range, made by New Zealand cheesemakers. The new cheeses are called:
● Woolworths Crumbly Cheese
● Woolworths Creamy Cheese
● Woolworths Basil Pesto Flavoured Creamy Cheese
● Woolworths Goats Milk Creamy Cheese

Woolworths will also be helping its customers get used to the change with dedicated signage in stores, highlighting the new “feta style” range.

"Crumbly Cheese" is a Greek style cheese which is a traditional feta style, while "Creamy Cheese" is a Danish style feta which is characteristically creamy.

Woolworths New Zealand’s General Manager of Woolworths Food Company, Andre Visser, said the hope is that by getting the new names in front of customers now, they will have plenty of time to get used to the change.

“We’ve worked really closely with our cheesemakers to create a ‘feta-tastic’ range of cheeses that we think New Zealanders are going to love even if the name on the packet has changed,” said Visser.

“The selected names have been chosen to highlight each cheese’s distinct attributes and to help customers understand the differences with each. For example, our new crumbly cheese is fantastic for salads, while our creamy cheese is simply delicious blended into a dip or sauce.”
