The demand for sustainable packaging in the confectionery industry, including biscuits, chocolate, and filled chocolates, is rising. ProSweets Cologne, in collaboration with ISM during the Sweet Week from January 28 to 31, 2024, showcases the industry's current trend towards eco-friendly packaging solutions. Recyclability and optimal protection are key priorities, driving the exploration of alternative materials with a significant portion of renewable raw materials.

The event highlights the shift away from plastic in packaging, with paper or cardboard emerging as preferred alternatives wherever possible. Producers are increasingly focusing on enhancing recyclability and reducing packaging weight. The co-staged ISM and ProSweets Cologne represent the entire sweets and snacks industry value chain, providing a platform for producers, suppliers, and decision-makers to exchange ideas, promote networking, and explore synergies.

Prof. Dr. Markus Schmid from the Sustainable Packing Institute (SPI) emphasised the importance of making informed decisions regarding material choices for sustainable packaging. He stresses the need for functional and sustainable solutions, considering the functional restrictions and ecological footprint of materials. The Sustainable Packaging Special Show in Hall 10.1 at ProSweets Cologne will showcase recent successes in developing functional and sustainable bio-based plastics.

Peter Désilets, COO of Pacoon Sustainability Concepts GmbH, discussed the materials and technical innovations driving the transition to sustainable packaging. He highlighted the importance of selecting materials that offer optimal machinability for sweets and snack manufacturers. Fibre-based packaging is presented as a forward-looking option.

Machine builders exhibiting at ProSweets Cologne align with the trend toward paper-based packaging and nanomaterials made from plastic. Innovative technologies aim to enable more economical cuts, improved material utilisation, and optimised formats. The emphasis is on flexible machines capable of handling various packaging materials.

The event showcases examples of sustainable packaging materials, such as fibre-based packaging, and explores the potential of regrowing plastic alternatives. Grass paper is gaining importance as a resource-saving alternative to conventional paper.

ProSweets Cologne is a platform for the confectionery industry's entire supply spectrum, covering packaging, packaging technologies, raw materials, ingredients, and process technology.
