Supermarket customers in the UK are being warned about a WhatsApp scam currently circulating online. Sainsbury’s and Morrisons customers have both been targeted by the scam that involves a link to a fake survey, which once completed customers are told they will receive a £150 voucher.
The online survey asks for participants personal details including an email, home address and phone number promising either a voucher or gift in exchange. The message also asks recipients to share the link once completed.
Consumer charity Which? was notified of the scam and quickly issued a warning to customers as well as informing both Morrisons and Sainsbury.
The message read, "I just received a free £150 gift voucher from Morrisons. Get yours before the offer ends. Thank me later.”
Both Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have released statements informing their customers that the message is indeed a scam. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Customers should always be mindful of phishing scams. This message is not from Sainsbury’s, and we are advising customers to delete it.”
Consumer watchdog Which? has advised the public against opening links if they are unsure whether or not they are legitimate. Experts recommend customers contact the company directly beforehand to ensure the offer is genuine.
