A hair dye product that had been linked to severe reactions in Britain and New Zealand, Clairol Nice ‘n Easy dye in natural black, will now return on supermarket shelves after its distributor Procter & Gamble tested it and assured there were no safety or quality issues.
At least four Kiwi women allegedly experienced reactions needing medical treatment, such as skin rashes, chemical-like burns and swelling. According to a spokesperson, however, they were cases of ‘individual allergic reactions or sensitivity to ingredients in the product’, and similar incidents may occur with every brand. All permanent dyes, especially dark ones, contain an irritant chemical known as PPD and, even though regulations allow PPD to comprise up to 2 percent of a product, manufacturers are not required to state its exact amount.
