Earlier this year, President Donald Trump said that he was looking to impose tariffs on imported goods, including popular products “Made in Italy”. This includes products like wine, olive oil and cheese.
In his tweets, Trump said, “The EU has taken advantage of the US on trade for many years. It will soon stop!” Rattling an already fragile truce, Trump’s latest Twitter outburst was poorly received in light of last years changes to the steel and aluminium import regulations.
The targeted products include wine, Pecorino cheese, olives and olive oil, seafood and fruit. In addition to food products, there are also things such as helicopters and aircraft parts that are being targeted in retaliation to the subsidies received by aircraft maker, Airbus.
Italian exporters and producers would face an immensely reduced export market if the US were to impose these regulations—the US is currently Italy’s third-biggest trading partner after Germany and France.
